EDUCATIONAL "COOK OUT"
UNDERDOG PROJECT - Spring 2022
Educational 'Cook Out' with Inclusion Ventures
Sponsored by Meatline butchers and featuring actor, Jamie Chambers (Star Wars/Fury/Morris Men), we took a trip to the Inclusion Ventures centre in Jaywick, Essex, to educate and inspire young adults in the art of cooking exciting and healthy food at home. Throughout the day we taught the group how to make 'street food dirty burgers', how to create amazing dishes from the humble chicken thigh, and even got them to try AND ENJOY liver!

MORRIS MEN FEATURE FILM - FINAL PICK UP DAY
UNDERDOG PROJECT - July 2022
'Morris Men' Feature film - Final pick up day
The final shooting day of the Morris Men shoot ended a 2-year journey of production. With only a few key extra scenes to shoot we took three lucky #underdogcrew members: Jodie and Bobby Cavalier and William Morgan along to be part of this final day. Throughout the day they got hands on with the entire process: filming, setting up lighting and cameras, operating the 'Steadycam' and clapperboard. Jodie, as positive and brave as can be for an eleven-year-old even jumped in and has a role in the actual movie!

As with all our 2021/2022 #underdogcrew participants, these three will receive their certificates at the UK premiere of the Morris Men movie on October 29th at the historic Princes Theatre in Clacton-on-Sea.

"Thankyou so much for this experience. I will really treasure it for the rest of my life and will remember all the new things I have learned throughout my time on set in the future." ESME APPLEYARD
"I’ve had so much fun these past few days and I'm really looking forward to more opportunities like this in the future. I do now think that there could be a place for me in the acting industry." SOFIA BELLOMO

Founding #UnderdogCrew member,
Joseph Allison, had a vision!
A highly ambitious pirate/zombie themed music video. Huge production values, multi camera shoot, a cast and crew of over twenty people. A multiple day schedule involving several highly complex special makeup effects and costume changes... a potential production nightmare in an incredibly enclosed space, with all the logistical and health & safety challenges of a large crew. Just ask Co executive Producer and head of hospitality, Laura Morgan, who's task it was to look after and cater for everybody across two hot, sunny days on a docked barge in St Osyth, Essex.

JOSEPH ALLISON (right) on-set of DB Morgan's 'Morris Men' movie

Joining us originally via recommendation from his university course tutor, Joe had earned his stripes on the first three of DB Morgan's feature films. He had a clear vision... so we made it happen!
And... EPICALLY... it's going to be shown on the big screen at the UK premiere of DB Morgan's Morris Men movie on October 29th at the historic Princes Theatre in Clacton-on-Sea as the 'Forest of Fools' band play LIVE!!!
#underdogcrew interns all receive a FREE TICKET and are encouraged to bring along family and friends to celebrate their achievement as they collect their certificates and awards.

What an amazing experience the last two days have been. Well done to all the behind the scenes talent, including the Underdog Crew and Rodney's Tuskar crew... just absolutely makes me so proud to be amongst all this talent, and even better having the best laugh all the way, even when we ate maggots hahahaha, much much love to you all xx
MIKE RUSHFORTH - Actor

That's what it's all about! Amazing weekend with amazing people doing amazing things. So much love, passion and talent, old friends and new, and a bucket load of smiles and laughter. JEZ GIBBONS - Forest of Fools Band

‘The Teen Mental Health Epidemic’
-
One in six children aged 5 to 16 were identified as having a probable mental health problem in July 2021. A huge increase from one in nine in 2017.
-
The number of A&E attendances by young people aged 18 or under with a recorded diagnosis of a psychiatric condition has more than tripled between 2010 and 2023.
-
Over 7% of 17-year-olds reported having self-harmed with suicidal intent at some point in their lives.
-
Nearly half of 17-19 year-olds with a diagnosable mental health disorder has self-harmed or attempted suicide at some point, rising to 52.7% for young women.
‘The power of inclusion’
At face value ‘The Slip’ is a forward thinking and relatively daring expose on the troubles and plight of teenagers in modern Britain today. Each episode tackles differing - and sometimes hard hitting - subjects relevant to modern UK youth culture. Shining a spotlight on the realities and truths that form a major part of many young lives, ‘The Slip’ will possibly make for uncomfortable viewing at times, whilst always tackling tough issues with age appropriate sensitivity, honesty, compassion and educational value.

Produced as part of the 'Underdog Crew' TV production course.
‘Underdog Crew’ 2023 | Television production workshops

Inclusivity: up to 14 interns from non neuro-typical or disadvantaged backgrounds.
Project aims:
-
Advancement of the Underdog Crew media training programmes.
-
Expansion of our professional output and level of professional training.
-
An exciting project that highlights current teen issues in the UK.
-
Stealth education around mental health, addiction and societal issues.
-
Creating an ongoing revenue generation project for The Underdog Crew C.I.C
-
Enhancing our national media focus.
Five teenagers, thrown together by circumstance, fight the system in order to find their place in the world, preserve the sanctuary of their spiritual home and come together to win ‘Band Idol UK’... and earn the validation that comes with it.
A bold and forward thinking series reflecting the highs and lows of 12-15-year-olds and their fractured lives in the UK today. Told through the lens of fourteen-year-old Macey Caine, sole carer to an alcoholic Mother acutely gripped in a downward mental health spiral.

The solution
"Engaging with nature is linked to positive health benefits and general wellbeing across age ranges, cultures and social class with those reporting lower wellbeing scores initially experiencing the greatest improvements. Studies have shown that nature-based practices can lead to improvements in symptoms of depression, anxiety, addictions, emotional regulation and difficulties associated with autism. Nature exposure has also been found to play an important role in child development, benefitting overall wellbeing, cognition and ADHD symptoms."
A 2023 systematic review of 92 randomised controlled trials found significant reductions in depression and anxiety scores with nature-based interventions, as well as improvements in physical health measures such as lowered blood pressure.
Nature-based interventions have also been shown to positively affect some of the more profound aspects of the human experience, such as meaning, purpose, belonging, self acceptance and sense of autonomy. There is a wealth of evidence to show that a person’s connection to nature is key to the physical and mental health benefits of nature exposure, and that interventions which facilitate nature connection have the largest and most sustained positive impacts. Outdoor pursuits also teach valuable life skills, such as problem-solving, leadership, teamwork, and communication. These skills can help young people to become more independent, confident, and resilient, preparing them for future challenges.

Rewind to 2pm on Sunday 17th March… another celebration of the first year of Underdog Crew Studios success and the latest grant from the National Lottery ‘awards-for-all’.
The grand unveiling of the crew’s new minibus. DB Morgan hands the microphone to a range of project supporters and ambassadors, the Trustees from ACT, actors Charlene Aldridge and Mike Rushforth and a couple of Underdog Crew members and parents.
Five minutes of deep emotional testimonial follows to a silent crowd as a wide range of people explain the transformational power of the crew’s mission to ‘fix and empower’ some of the most at-risk young adults of Colchester.
DB Morgan and the team contemplate their next roadtrip adventure as their empowerment resources continue to expand. They talk about the magic of the movies and it seems that the Underdog Crew has found an inspiring way to rub a little of that magic off with his innovative youth media projects.DB Morgan’s Underdog Crew adventures can be supported and followed at www.underdogcrew.org and subscribing to ‘UnderdogCrewTV’ on Youtube.
